In The Sims, billboards can only be seen in a neighborhood or sub-neighborhood view, and cannot be placed by the player. At the lower edge of the screen, toward the left corner, a billboard with the text "The Sims" can be found. If Unleashed is not installed, this is at the entrance to the Sim Lane loop. With Unleashed, this will be found on an island in the river's mouth. Billboards also appear in some sub-neighborhoods.
The Sims 2Edit
In The Sims 2, billboards can also be found in neighborhoods. This is the first game where the player is able to place billboards in the neighborhood. The player can place 2 types of billboards in the base game, and some expansion packs add more. One billboard is written in English, while the others are exclusively in Simlish. If Nightlife or a later expansion pack is installed, and the player has the "Neighborhood Visibility" option set to high, billboards may be visible while playing on the lot. With University, the player can make a sort of "billboard" by using the white SimGreek letters on a colorful wall.
The Sims 3Edit
Billboards can be found in The Sims 3, though they still cannot be placed on lots. In Riverview, there is a billboard with a picture of a car on it that appears to be on a residential lot, though it isn't. Bridgeport is famous for its billboards, many of which are placed on buildings.
Billboards can only be placed with Create a World.
The Sims 4: City LivingEdit
In The Sims 4: City Living, billboards can be found in the neighborhoods of San Myshuno on top of various decorative buildings. For the first time in the series, billboards are now fully buyable in build mode and can be used freely on normal lots. There are two types of billboards; upright and on the wall.
- In The Sims and The Sims 2 billboards had English text on them, in The Sims 3 and The Sims 4, they are exclusively in Simlish.
- There is one billboard in Bridgeport that shows a car that actually can be bought.
