The Crumplebottom Family

Agnes Crumplebottom hadn't even changed her last name into her husband's when an unfortunate accident on her honeymoon ended their marriage. Between her growing bitterness and her husband's ghost scaring away gentleman callers, only the bravest Sim would ever try to win her heart and fortune now.

Player stories

The Crumplebottom family (sometimes written CrumpleBottom family) is a refined, sophisticated, and dignified family from Pleasantview. In most of their depictions, they seem to carry themselves as the most civilized people in town, sometimes even acting haughty. The family's last name hints towards the family's "uptight" behavior, suggesting that if a nearby sim acts immodestly or in a wild manner, a family member would get his or her "bottom" in a "crumple." The known members are Prudence, Simon, Agnes, Mrs. Crumplebottom and Cornelia Goth, née Crumplebottom.

During their lifetime, the Crumplebottoms lived in Pleasantview, but in The Sims 2 all of them are deceased save Mrs. Crumplebottom, said to be a distant relation to the rest of the family. Although she is the only true Crumplebottom left in-game, the family's blood still runs in the prominent Goth Family. It is, however, implied that there are more distant family members still alive, although their identities are currently unknown.

There is a street named Crumplebottom Drive in Sim State University, perhaps implying some philanthropic work by the family for the university.

Onomatology

Crumplebottom -- "Crumple" means "to bend out of shape". "Bottom" refers to "the lowest or deepest part of anything".

Simon Crumplebottom (Mortimer's maternal grandfather): Means "hearkening" or "listening".

Prudence Crumplebottom (Mortimer's maternal grandmother): Means "good judgement". Also connects to the word "Prude",

Agnes Crumplebottom (Mortimer's maternal aunt): Meaning "chaste" or in other terms: "refraining from WooHoo which is regarded as immoral".

Mrs. Crumplebottom (Mrs. Crumplebottom) : A prude (Old French prude) is a person who is described as being concerned with decorum or propriety.

Robert Crumplebottom : Popular name meaning bright fame/dull life.

Elmira Clamp (Mrs. Crumplebottom's niece) : Shortened form of Edelmira, Spanish feminine form of Adelmar, which is the combination of adal "noble" and mar "famous". It appears in the play 'Tartuffe' (1664) by the French playwright Molière.

Clamp -- probably from clamb, "clamp, cleat." clinch, clench, secure.

Erik Darling (Agnes Crumplebottom's husband) -- Erik means "one", "alone" in Old Norse. Also perhaps he was named after musician Erik Darling.

Darling -- Means "beloved one", or "dear".

Ian Arneson (Elmira Clamp's niece) : The Scottish Gaelic version of John, which means God is Gracious.

Arneson -- Unknown
