Julio spent his childhood in the shanty towns of his hometown, and has grown accustomed to life in them. While he was not an ace student in school, he maintained a solid circle of friends in the slums, and would meet up with them on a daily basis. Despite his family's financial situation, and despite the life he lived, Julio was content and felt very attached to his friends. He also maintained a close bond with his father, although he did not have a very good relationship with his mother or his younger siblings.
Julio had the most disapproval with his family's emigration to SimVille, as it meant leaving all of his close friends behind. His relationship with his family members deteriorated, especially the one with his father; he frequently quarrels with Thomas, and still holds him responsible for forcibly abandoning his friends back home. Julio, having lost the support he once had from friends and family, devolved into a life of crime during the start of his teenaged years, much to his parents' disapproval.
While Julio has no other friends of his age in SimVille, he is friends with Amar Newbie, which is a plus. He has also gained some recognition from the community for winning a few fights against Serge Barb.
Julio's character is based on the older brother of Garrett in K6ka's novel For my little brother,[n 1] who was also named Julio. While Julio is mostly absent from the story, it is revealed that he also had a strong bond with his father, which waned after his father left the family. Julio, lacking a solid relationship with his mother and his two younger siblings, also fell into a life of crime, looking for a way out of poverty, but only succeeded in exacerbating the divide between him and his family members.
