Scratching posts are objects included in The Sims: Unleashed, The Sims 2: Pets, The Sims 3: Pets, The Sims 4: Cats & Dogs and The Sims 4: My First Pet Stuff. They are used to fulfill the Fun[TS:U], Scratch[TS2:P][TS3:Pets] or Play[TS4:C&D] motive of cats. They also encourage cats not to destroy furniture.

While the catalog entry for this object shows an Energy rating, it does not appear that cats will actually sleep in it unless directed to using the boolProp controlPets true cheat. They will, however, sit on it, and will gain Comfort and Fun from doing so.

Werewolves[TS3:SN] unfortunately cannot use scratching posts, despite also having a cat-like tendency to scratch chairs while in werewolf mode.
