General[]

The country is also referred to as Simerica, Simladonia, Simlandia, Simsonia or Simadonia.[1] Citizens of SimNation are known as "Sims". The country's national animal is the llama, and the official language is Simlish (although English can be seen on some signs, posters etc.). The coat of arms is very similar to the United States of America, using the eagle as the symbol. Its official currency is the Simoleon (§), although in some more isolated rural areas MagiCoins are also used. There are notable things, such as garden gnomes and plastic lawn flamingos, which are or have been stereotypical aspects of American suburban culture. Real world countries such as France, Canada, Norway, Japan, China, Egypt, Ireland, the UK, and the US are sometimes mentioned in object descriptions, and even visited in certain expansion packs. In all Sims games, cars are shown driving on the right.

Economy and History[]

Economy[]

One may assume that SimNation has a very strong economy, considering how items are priced in Simoleons in The Sims, The Sims 2, The Sims 3, and The Sims 4.

Most first-hand items do not have fluctuations in their purchase or sales prices, so the main economy can be assumed to be a planned economy. Select items can have fluctuations through consignment/thrift stores, career progression benefits, newspaper coupons, big sales days[TS3], or selling collectibles to rabbit holes instead of in the inventory.[TS3] Second-hand items are usually subject to value decrease from perceived wear and tear.

Social security appears to be non-existent, though Sims can receive retirement pensions and paid holidays off.[TS3:S] Many public lot facilities are provided free of charge to all residents, including libraries, swimming pools, museums, public gyms, bathrooms, taxis, subways, juice drinks, use of desktop computers, hot tubs, saunas, elementary and high school equipment, non-activity touring of rabbit holes,[TS3], and beds that are not on resorts.[TS3]

Sims are also entitled to newspapers, hospital births, fishing rods, one or more sets of clothes for each clothing type, one cellphone,[TS3][TS4] small meals,[TS3] one camera[TS3:UL], and time sickness hospital treatment[TS3:ITF] free of charge. Witches[TS3:SN] are additionally entitled to one Classic Magic Wand and one magic broom.

The tax level is relatively low, starting at around §50/week for the lowest tax bracket, to around §4,000/week for households with a fortune of over §1,000,000.[TS3].

Currency[]
Gold simoleon

The official currency of SimNation, is the simoleon, (symbol "§"). It appears to not have decimals, similar to the Japanese yen or the South Korean won. In The Sims 3: World Adventures, even when a Sim travels to a tourist destination outside of SimNation, simoleons are in use there. This may mean simoleons might be some kind of "international currency" (like the American dollar ($) in the United States and other countries, or the euro (€) in the countries of the eurozone) on Sim's Earth planet.

However, as it can be seen in The Sims: Makin' Magic, there are isolated places in SimNation, like Magic Town, which uses its own currency known as MagiCoins.

There also exists ancient coins, a form of currency Sims can find while doing adventures in World Adventures, possibly meaning it was the currency used in ancient times, and there are some left.

The Sims 4 has been established to take place in an alternate universe, so there is a possibility for it to have an alternate history. It may not share the same history with the other games in the series. Please keep that in mind if using this as a source.

67 to 2.9 million years ago[]

History

Earliest history mentions dinosaurs roaming the earth 67 million years ago.[2] According to fossils from The Sims 4 Australosimicus afarensis, or "Primal Sims", lived between 3.9 and 2.9 million years ago. During that time sharp little triangle rocks were used by ancient hunters to catch food. These Sim presumably created cave paintings that can be found in Tartosa.[3] Over time people began to plant, farm, and raise livestock. It can be assumed that Australosimicus afarensis lived alongside with dinosaurs, since they used T-rex arms as decorations. Cenozoic era is mentioned to happen[4] as well as Neanderthals are mentioned.[5]

It is also said that 6,700 years ago pottery was invented.[6]

Next known Sims were SimNatives. They inhabited the islands that are now Vacation Island, Twikkii Island, and the islands featured in various versions of The Sims 2: Castaway. They are implied to still be around, though perhaps in a distant and unseen area; the natives encountered in The Sims Castaway Stories are presumably SimNatives.

Civilization in Indus Valley is mentioned around year 4000 BCE and it's said to have domesticated orange trees.[7]

Classical age[]

Ancient empires such as the Egyptian, Greek, and Roman empires are mentioned in several games. The Trojan Horse and Trojan War are mentioned[8] as well as Etruscan civilization being integrated to the Roman Empire.[9] The Roman Empire is said to have had a highly developed sewage system for public and private toilets, but later fell.[10] The Roman Curtain was also invented during the construction of the Roman Colloseum. [11] It's possible that during one of these empires Gluteus Maximus led the battle against the armies of Hemoroydz and won, which is mentioned in the object description for the "Triumphal Arch of Gluteus Maximus" in The Sims 4: Romantic Garden Stuff. Caesar Psychopathus is mentioned to be one of the lesser-known emperors of Roman empire. He came to power through bribery, blackmail and gossip. He also married his sister, killed his parents and commissioned 10,000 statues in his likeness, after which he drowned himself in the Tiber River.[12] A map of the Roman Empire can be found in The Sims in buy mode.[13] The spread of Christianity resulted to iconoclast and in 387 AD during anti-pagan campaign many Hellenistic statues were ordered to be destroyed.[14]

The Olmec[15], Aztec[16] and Celtic[17] civilizations, the Ming Empire[18], the Song Dynasty[19], the Khmer Empire[20] , the Mughal Empire[21], the Kush kingdom[22] and the Mongols[23] are mentioned, as well as barbarians attacking Champs les Sims[24].

Middle Ages[]

The opening cinematic of The Sims Medieval shows a young monarch of the medieval period (c.476-1450 CE in real-world history) setting sail to found a new nation on an unfamiliar continent that is already home to a number of small independent kingdoms. This can be interpreted as the creation of the country that would eventually annex its neighbors and become modern-day SimNation, although in gameplay itself this is left up to the imagination. The geography of the medieval kingdom does, however, share some similarities with that shown in installments set in the present day, perhaps adding some credence to the theory that they take place in the same location, albeit several centuries apart.

It is said that Spain was under Moorism rule for an unspecified amount of time,[25] and Vikings are also mentioned.[26]

Sometime during 14th century knitting was invented.[27] In The Sims 2, the description of the Gingerbread House mentions Europeans organizing crusades and bringing gingerbread back to Europe.[28]

Years before the start of The Sims 3, Admiral Landgraab sailed to the area that is now Vacation Island. Unfortunately, the natives were disgruntled by his presence, and the poor young admiral's life ended there. However, it seems that his body was later recovered, and he was laid to rest in a tomb in Champs Les Sims.

At an unknown time, colonists arrived in Sulani during Sixam era and in Selvadorada, where ancient Omiscan civilizations had lived for a long time. It is unknown whether Omiscan civilization disappeared before or after the colonists. It's also said that Madre Cosecha is the founder of Selvadorada, and that she helped the people settle into the place during a time of great famine. It is possible that Selvadorada was colonised by Spain.[29] The Spanish Empire later fell, which might have been caused by their loss of ships[30] and nationalist uprisings.[31]

At an unknown time, Captain Pugwash and his first mate, Alvilda, became first pirates to land on Barnacle Bay. At an unspecified time Henburstam IV was king of Windenburg or the larger area.[32] Another leader was Otto Von-Windenburg, who cemented his legacy as one of the greatest and dumbest leaders of Windenburg.[33] Lord Ike was, for unknown reasons, run out of town with his family. Copernicus created the heliocentric theory and other historical figures such as Napoleon Bonaparte, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Galileo, Shakespeare[34] and Michaelangelo[35] have also been mentioned in object descriptions.

The Black Plague took place in the 14th century, and killed a large number of the population.[36] Electricity was first mentioned in books of William Gilbert and Browne, English scientists in 1600s.[37]

16th century to 19th century[]

In the 16th century, J. Marano created the "16th Century Monte Vista Globe Bar". In the 17th century, Duchess Lucine created an unknown number of paintings only painted by the moonlight. She despised the sunlit paintings done by her peers. Rugs were produced in Persia.[38] In 1713, the Dutch gave Louis XIV of France a coffee bush, whose descendants now produce one third of all the coffee in the world.[39]

Great tables war is mentioned to have happened centuries ago and after it society found themselves with a shortage of tables since so many were lost in battle.[40]

19th century to 20th century[]

In 19th century in Germany, Christmas trees became popular.[41] Gold Rush[42] and the Wild West are said to happen as well. It is said that London burned down, but this event can be prevented by players traveling through time by Time machine[43]. The Civil War of Simnation happened as well, leading to the death of an important politician. While traveling in time, Sim will try to prevent his death, but will be stopped by The Keeper of Time.[44] Sims also went through various artistic styles, such as Victorian, Neoclassicism, Baroque, Rococo, Expressionism, Pointillism, Dada and various others. British Empire is mentioned as well in object description in The Sims[45] as well as Imperial Russia and Colonial Africa.[46] In 1850, Irascible was sent to ply to Indian ports.[47] During the mid-to-late 1800s there was high demand for Japanese imports, which were tailored specially for the West and were far cry from traditional Japanese fans at the time.[48]

At the end of 19th and beginning of 20th century there was cultural change regarding the decline of religion and the rise of capitalism.[49]

20th century to present[]

In 1906 "The SimCity Fire" took place and destroyed many items of daily use.[50] It was started by kerosene engine during filming of "Toaster Rockets, then the Death Ray".[51]

Chalkboard was used to advertise a special at the Pathway Lounge of Oasis Springs in 1932. Bernt Helier declared himself as a sovereign nation which only lasted 8 hours in 1934.[52] In 1952, James Watson discovered the shape of DNA.[53] In 1962, Wood-Glass war ended, but this was overlooked due to more prominent global conflicts at the time.[54]. It is likely that these global conflicts, possibly World War II[55] has led to Cold War with RedCity and USSR

In the 1960s there was Flower Power and the craft movement,[56] followed by 1970s ideas of free software, good public schools, affordable housing and the hot tub, which is said to be the only one to survive the tax rebellion.[57]

For an unspecified amount of time, it's said that a horse was elected to the parliament of SimNation, named Palomar.[58] It is also said that there was a lamppost freedom movement as a reaction to prime minister Francois Nardone's lamp industry regulation.[59]

There is mention of no-progress theory in The Sims, which can be interpreted by some players as in game reason for lack of technological development in The Sims compared with The Sims 3, which takes place 25 years earlier.[60]

The connection between the version of SimNation in The Sims 4 is not known, as The Sims 4 takes place in an alternate universe compared to the other games in the series.

Future[]

Info information icon
Information
Although the future of The Sims series is left up to the player's imagination, these events took place long after The Sims 2.

As the SimNation reached a peak of 5 billion in the mid 23rd century, population growth has come to a stop, most likely from overpopulation as the available resources can not sustain further growth of Sims. However, advancements in technikigy has allowed Sims to process food instantly without the need for farms. This invention would be the Food synthesizer. Plumbots started to replace service Sims. A Sim named Emit Relevart travels through time, causing Time Portals to appear in past worlds. A Sim from the past world travels to Oasis Landing. [61]

A group of Sims has left their home world to search for a new planet to colonize. Their spacecraft crashed into an alien planet and started settling there by harnessing the native crystals to build a sustainable habitat. Anthony Cross becomes the founder of this new settlement called Lunar Lakes.[62]

The exact location and extent of SimNation is unknown. However, in many Sims games, there are mountains, swamps, deserts, and grassy plains, much like the environment in various parts of the United States. Hence, some players would call it Simerica. However, SimNation's official animal is the llama, which is native to the mountains of South America. It is still possible that llamas do not actually live in SimNation, but are used only as a symbol. Despite this, they do appear in SimCity 4, so it is still unknown which is right.

SimNation could be an independent part of North America, possibly around real-life Nevada or California. It is most likely that SimNation is located on Earth, but on an alternate universe from the real-world. When watching the weather channel in The Sims 2 with Seasons installed, the weather map will show a landmass shaped vaguely like India with the eastern coast continuing and not much of the west coast seen. India also has the features of SimNation geography, for example, mountains and deserts.

Some people speculate that SimNation and the world Sims inhabit are set in an entirely different universe, because in The Sims 4 arrival trailer, Sims are seen to have come from space to the real-world Earth.

There are various maps and globes that can be found in The Sims games, but the land they depict can wary from one to another. While some show the real-world Earth´s continents, the others show different shapes.

The Moon in The Sims 3 and The Sims 4 greatly resemble the Moon in the real-world, suggesting that the Sims' world is also Earth.

Life[]

While the vast majority of the citizens of SimNation are Sims, there are many other life states, most of which are derived from Sims themselves. Many of these, such as werewolves, fairies, vampires, witches, and mummies are the result of Sims undergoing some sort of transformation. PlantSims are unusual in that a new member of the species can be produced when a Sim is transformed, or when a PlantSim reproduces by sporulation. Some, such as ghosts and zombies, are related to death; ghosts being the spectral remains of dead Sims, and zombies being incompletely resurrected Sims. Servos, the earlier SimBots, and Plumbots, being synthetic Sims, are something of a special case.

Others, such as aliens, genies, Bigfoot, the Grim Reaper, and possibly the original tribe of PlantSims, are not transformed from Sims, and are not normally part of the society of SimNation. However, aliens can enter, and have entered, the Sim gene pool through pollination, and (very) occasionally "go native" and choose to live among Simkind. Also, members of the Bigfoot clan who have befriended Sims have been known to leave their native Three Lakes region and live among Sims.

It is unknown whether these species exist in numbers in the whole world of The Sims universe or only in SimNation, however, it is safe to assume they are a minority.

There are also many animal species. Some are pests, such as cockroaches and flies; others are wild, such as bears, butterflies and beetles, penguins, skunks and fish; others are domesticated, including aquarium fish, iguanas, turtles, several types of birds, womrats, hamsters, guinea pigs, dogs, cats, and horses. The eagle is the possible national bird of SimNation, as seen on their possible coat of arms. Llamas are implied to be the national animal of SimNation, as it is referenced in numerous objects, locations, and media.

Religion[]
Philosophy

Not much is known about religion in SimNation since it is a secular nation. There appears to be no official state religion, and there seems to be an absence of organized religion in The Sims, The Sims 2, The Sims 3 and The Sims 4. However, churches were present in the original SimCity and in SimCity 2000, and SimCity 4 includes the option to build Houses of Worship and Cemeteries in the city. And in The Sims 4 Sims can leave a sugar skull offering, showing, along with the description that Sims celebrate the Day Of The Dead. Religion was probably deliberately left open-ended for the player to decide how to envision religious practice in The Sims.[77]

Sims do appear to believe in an afterlife and the supernatural, but not in any religious way. The Grim Reaper appears in The Sims and its sequels and deceased Sims appear as ghosts. Also, various occult-related items, activities, and, in the case of The Sims: Makin' Magic an entire sub-neighborhood related to the occult have appeared throughout the series. They also seem to be somewhat aware of the player as they sometimes wave to get the players attention when something's wrong, as if breaking the fourth wall.

In The Sims, the description of a few Decorative items makes mention of not only Christianity and excommunication, but also of Graeco-Roman paganism and related deities, such as Aphrodite in Curse of Aphrodite, Ares and Bacchus in Decadence Tapestry. Budhist monastery in Nepal and Dalai Lama are mentioned in Annapurna Pet Feeder, trees being sacred for Samoans in Makutu Tiki Dresser and villages using "spirit gate" staircases by keeping out evil spirits. According to Alii Kahuna Ceremonial Tiki item description, ancient Hawaiians used Tiki figures to honor the creator.

In The Sims 2 there are mentioned real life religions, such as Judaism in Chanukah Menorah, Catholic and Puritans in Gingerbread House and Buddhism in Osho Nuff Tablet.

In The Sims 2: University, students majoring in Philosophy will take a class entitled "Who Controls the Pie Menu and Why?", implying that some Sims do take part in some sort of philosophical-religious debate; however, this is probably intended as a joke for the player, who controls the pie menu (usually presumed to be invisible to Sims, much like the PlumbBob) and is therefore in a sense "playing god".

In The Sims 2 for Nintendo DS, a god called the Prime Heifer is revealed. Ava Cadavra has the player build a shrine for the Prime Heifer's statue, but it is later destroyed by the player's Sim and replaced with a statue of an Egyptian God by Horus Menhoset IX. In The Sims 2 for PlayStation Portable, the Kine Society, which was founded by Dominic Newlow and is led by Sinjin Balani, worships the same god under the name Beelzebeef.

In The Sims 2: Bon Voyage, visitors to Twikkii Island may accidentally anger an ancient island god, Jumbok IV, by desecrating the ruins of his temple. The long-dead tribe of island people in The Sims 2: Castaway apparently worshiped a llama god, as another ruined temple containing llama idols can be found on Volcano Island. However, the temples of both gods have fallen into disrepair, suggesting that they are part of an ancient system of beliefs no longer followed by either the islanders themselves or their neighbors in SimNation.

In The Sims 3, Hortimus is mentioned to be god of sun and plants in Sun disc object.

In The Sims Medieval, Sims partake in a form of religion resembling medieval Christianity. While the religion itself has no mentioned name, it consists of two named branches; the Jacoban Church, which relies on being feared and that the Watcher is a vengeful God, and the Peteran Church, which relies on being loved and that the Watcher is a loving God. Assuming The Sims Medieval and The Sims series take place in the same universe, it appears that the religion survived in the modern age and the Sims in Selvadorada believe in the same God.

Assuming the Sims universe is in the same universe as the game Spore is, the Spode Cult may be a religion followed by Sims; however, the Spode Cult may have formed later, formed by an alien race, or the game may not even take place in the same universe.

In Windenburg and Brindleton Bay, a church-like structure makes an appearance as an environmental building, but it cannot be visited.

The Sims 4: Jungle Adventure reveals the Omiscans believed in a being known as the Watcher and complex religion, describing creation of Sims and afterlife in Glyphs.

The Sims 4: Cottage Living added a new location "The Bramblewood". The Isle of Volpe National Park which druids are referenced to have inhabited, suggesting some historic religious practices (possibly nature/ animal centred) in the area.

In The Sims 4: My Wedding Stories Hinduism is mentioned in Colorful Marigolds Garland object description, mentioning Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, who are concidered an ideal couple in Hindu mythology.

Education[]
Education career icon
College icon

Public education in childhood and teenager years is free and compulsory for all Sims. The possible department for administrating education in SimNation is the Department of Education. SimNation also provide private and boarding schools, in which the latter cost tuition fees. In The Sims 3, some rabbit holes, such as the science labs, have classes that are open to all Sims. A lot of a Sim's education, however, is done at home, through either reading skill books or practicing on their own, with activities such as painting and stargazing.

Higher education is also available in SimNation with Sim State University, La Fiesta Tech, Academie Le TourSims University, University of Britechester and Foxbury Institute all making appearances. Sims University caters to young adults, adults and elders while the former three only cater towards young adults. The system of grading and Latin honors that higher education institutions use is similar to the four-year system found in the USA and Canada. The Greek system is also very similar to that seen in the USA. Unlike most schools in the real life USA, however, student debt is apparently non-existent, while tuition fees are manageable (§4,000~5,000 worth of courses are needed to graduate in Sims 3), suggesting a generous level of government spending and/or private investment/donations for higher education. The universities may be government-owned, or they may be privately owned and supported by the government or religious organizations, by large endowments (like Berea College), or by other business ventures affiliated with the college (like A Beka Book at Pensacola Christian College).

Technology[]
Science career icon
Physics

SimNation is very technologically advanced compared to real-life nation-states. The technology of the country includes Servos, SimBots, and Plumbots, the remarkable, and seemingly sentient, humanoid robots. The technology development in SimNation is possibly administrated by the National Science Research Laboratory (NSRL), in the capital of SimNation, Sim City. SimNation is so advanced that Sims in the public can access these technologies, as shown in the Sims University through Buy Mode. The Science Research Station can be used to clone, and experiment on different objects. The laboratory experiments with many sorts of technology from cesium atomic clocks to nuclear energy and to research of hybrid plants and new life.

A few districts appear to lag behind technologically, for instance Roaring Heights where TVs and computers are not placed by default and stereos are rare, and Dragon Valley where TVs and stereos are not placed by default while some lots have computers.

It is currently unknown if the rest of the world of The Sims universe is as advanced as SimNation. Foreign destinations like Champs Les Sims seem to be on a fairly similar level, although only small parts of these countries are seen.

Government[]
Political career icon
Political Science

Job descriptions from the Politics career suggest the government of SimNation is a form of representative democracy in a form of a republic. The centre where sessions of congress are held might be the SimNation Congress, although it might not appear in any Sims series. The career in the first two games has positions with names such as "State Representative", "Congressperson", and "Senator" and the job descriptions mention judicial and executive branches of government. This suggest that SimNation is a federation of territories and states, each with its own legislature, and the structure of the federal government of SimNation is similar to that of the United States of America.

The Politics career in The Sims 3 is more ambiguous as to the precise structure of the government; however, the existence of the office of Vice President again suggests a system similar to that used in the real-life USA.

Also, the level 10 in politics career is "Leader of the free world" (which may be interpreted as a head of state, the same position as a President), that means that a Sim can become head of state just by being promoted, without voting being mentioned. The President of the United States of America is often referred to as "the Leader of the Free World", further implying the influence of the real-life United States' political structure.

The idea that SimNation is a representative democracy is further reinforced from the Politisim channel in The Sims 4. Several candidates can be seen giving speeches at a debate. The channel also shows election maps and election results, along with a winner. These graphics are color-coded in a similar fashion to how political parties are typically color-coded.

At time of The Sims, there seems to be movement for SimNatives semi-autonomy. It is supported by money gained through sale of native wall hangings.[78]

Flags and Symbols[]

In The Sims 3, flags can often be found in front of military bases, police stations, schools, and city halls. These flags usually contain a plumbob with five green stripes on them, presumably the flag of SimNation. Flags of local worlds and municipalities may also be used. For example, a banner on the side of the Civic Center in Monte Vista contains a red background, white stripe, and a black llama. Flags outside the city hall of Aurora Skies are made of dark blue and white stripes. The city hall in Sunlit Tides contains a circular symbol with a red palm tree and text in Simlish, and a celtic symbol can be seen on the police station of Dragon Valley.

Flags outside public places can also be found in The Sims 4. In Get to Work, there's a flag outside of the police station that contains a green circle, white outline, and a llama silhouette. In Get Together, there are three flags in Lykke Centre between Hare Square and Hare and Hedgehog that feature a white symbol similar to the Fleur-de-lis. One of them, the red and blue flag, can be seen in Brindleton Bay. A purple and orange flag can be seen in the Fashion District in San Myshuno.

When Sims hack using a computer, a symbol that looks like a seal with a plumbob, eight stars, and some Simlish text, similar to the FBI's logo. It could be a symbol of a government intelligence agency in SimNation.

Military[]
Military career icon
Military career

The military of SimNation appears to be an all-volunteer force. It is possible that the SimNation Armed Forces is the military of SimNation, and the emblem (can be seen outside Fort Gnome Military Base) is their possible coat of arms. It is open to both male and female Sims; both are able to join the Military career track. In The Sims 2, teens and elders can also take up part-time roles. Unlike most modern military systems, there seem to be no enlistment terms, with discharges being granted effectively upon request.

No known wars have been identified in SimNation's history, although it is implied by Emperor Xizzle in The Sims 2 for Nintendo DS that Sims are at war with Aliens. This is probably why, in Strangetown, General Buzz Grunt shows pure hate towards Pollination Technician#9. A chance card in The Sims 2 implies that SimCity is in a state of Cold War with "RedCity", but does not go into any detail. In The Sims 2: Apartment Life it is mentioned in Vivian Cho's bio that her late husband Etokas died "in the line of duty", possibly implying that he was a soldier; however, this has not been confirmed by the game's creators.

Law[]
Law Enforcement career icon
Law career

A modern police force exists in SimNation, and the police forces are believed to be administrated by the local police authorities of a city or neighborhood. In The Sims series, crime does not seem to be treated harshly, with fines and short-term prison sentences being the only punishments. This contrasts with the SimCity series, where large federal and state prisons can be built. It is possible that crime is treated more harshly in the inner city areas shown in SimCity than it is in the wealthier areas shown in The Sims games, or that political attitudes to crime have changed in the time between the games.

Several activities, such as computer misuse, larceny, destruction of property, and child neglect are rife, and have few consequences. In The Sims 3, the police force aggressively monitors and tracks down minors who step off their home lot past curfew. Police will also sometimes arrest teenagers for sneaking out in The Sims 2.

SimNation also must have very high freedom of speech, as advertisements for Criminal careers can be found alongside lawful careers on the computer as well as in the newspaper.

Healthcare[]
W give free health clinic
Biology

While in the past, as shown in The Sims Medieval, Sims were frequently at risk of serious disease and major injury, most illnesses in modern-day SimNation are minor and non life-threatening. The most common illnesses are colds (which may be caught at work or school, or by coming into contact with an infected Sim), food poisoning (from eating spoiled food) and pregnancy symptoms such as nausea. Colds are treatable by resting at home and consuming certain soups and juices, while food poisoning and morning sickness will eventually end on their own. There is a risk of untreated colds developing into the more serious pneumonia, which can be fatal, as can the flu, which can be caught from proximity to vermin. Mummies and witches can curse other Sims with illness. Accidental injury seems to be virtually non-existent outside of occasional lab accidents, and though there are numerous ways to die prematurely (common causes include: fire, drowning, electrocution or starvation), a Sim who has come close to death but survived will recover very quickly and will not require hospital treatment. There is no form of emergency care to treat serious conditions, although in the Nintendo DS version of The Sims 3, starving Sims are taken to a hospital before starving to death which implies that the Sim is taken there by ambulance. However, there seems to be no way for Sims to call emergency for an ambulance when witnessing a dying Sim, as they will do nothing or cry.[80] Mental health problems such as nervous breakdowns are more common, and may be treated by the autonomous arrival of a Therapist, Social Bunny or Tragic Clown. The Insane trait will also cause Sims to talk to themselves, and want to do so. Other traits referencing mental illness include: Neurotic and Unstable, and more closely resemble real life mental illnesses.

Sims may or may not require medical attention, such as receiving vaccinations for flu and allergies in the hospital, and they may receive medical checkup and vaccination clinics by doctors. Most diseases can simply be treated by taking a rest at home. Doctors in SimNation do not appear to need any academic qualifications, at least to get started in the career. Hospitals are seen in The Sims 3 and The Sims 4, mainly for pregnancy and plastic surgery, though medical outreach programs and emergencies from out of town do also occur.

In The Sims 3, hospitals can be owned by private individuals. Doctors can receive extra payment from drug companies and visiting a doctor costs money. In the SimCity games, healthcare appears to be entirely government-controlled, since medical staff and ambulances are on the city payroll, and funding from the government directly affects the numbers of medical staff.

Strangely, while SimNation seems to be technologically advanced in most areas, the average lifespan of a Sim in the normal life state seems to be quite short by modern standards. This is evidenced by the fact that all the characters who are teens or older in The Sims 3 (at least, those who also appear in later games in the series' chronology, and are unaffected by the time-travel storyline) are deceased by the time of The Sims 2, which supposedly takes place 50 years later. In real-life terms, this would place the average life expectancy of a SimCitizen somewhere in the mid-60s. The reasons for this disparity are unknown. Most likely it is simply a result of the creators' attempt to frame the series continuity in real time, despite the fact that Sims' life stages do not progress realistically. Alternatively, it may stem from the creators' desire not to overpopulate the pre-made neighborhoods with Sims already in the elder stage.

Playable Sims are able to use items such as the Elixir of Life, Ambrosia, Life Fruit, Fountain of Youth and the Potion of Youth to potentially prolong their lifespans indefinitely. It is uncertain why these items are not more widely used, to the point that nobody ever dies of old age.

In The Sims series, there is no exact cause of elders dying of old age, instead stating it as "death by old age". In real life, elders would die of various conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, and cancer. This may be the reason that the generic "death by old age" is used as adding these conditions would increase the complexity of the games, though one might think of "death by natural causes" to describe elder Sims dying.

Sport[]
Professional Sports career icon

There is no "official" sport in SimNation, however there are sporting goods that can be purchased such as American footballs, basketballs, baseballs, association footballs, cheerleading uniforms, football goals, table tennis surfaces, skis, snowboards, windsurf boards, surf boards and simulators, climbing equipment, roller and ice skates, skipping ropes, boxing bags, training dummies, board breakers and volleyball nets, besides a variety of sports machines as treadmills, exercise bikes and weight machines. This suggests that these forms of sport are played in SimNation.

In most games of The Sims Series franchise, there is a professional sports career that Sims can join suggesting that there is a sports league in SimNation, however the exact sport is unknown, with often conflicting indications.

  • The icon of the career suggests that association football is being played. However the stadium would be too small for 11-a-side football to be played (but could host some variety of futsal, indoor football, or cageball), as it is built similar to an arena. It is likely that the stadium could have been scaled down to fit the 64x64 maximum lot size.
    • Console games in the Sims 3 era show a helmet from American football as the icon, instead of an association football ball.
  • There are indications that the sports league played in The Sims 3 could be baseball. One indication is that the terminology in the job description uses baseball terms such as "Minor Leagues", "Disabled List", and "saves".[81]
    • United States soccer minor leagues have existed since 1995, but are seldom referred to as Minor League. Though association football has no "Disabled List", injured players are recognized in the sport, and teams are expected to have large enough contracted rosters to step in for injured players in later matches.
  • Another indications is that when Sims become players, they wear baseball caps, and the scoring would match closely to a baseball game.
  • In The Sims 3, matches are played on Wednesdays and Sundays, loosely matching the schedule of real-life top-tier leagues, where the clubs play a weekend match (League or cup) and a weekday match (Cup or continental tournament). This differs from baseball where 5 or more games are played per week, and American football where 1 game is played per week.

Given the contradictory evidence, it is possible that the exact nature of the sport is left deliberately ambiguous and up to the player's imagination.

There are some regional differences in local signature sports:

In many cases in the Sims 3 era, the fields are featureless terrains added in Create-a-World, necessitating mods like Add Any Lot Size to add goalposts and such.

In The Sims 2: FreeTime, a new sports channel is added on TV. Two of the sports that are shown are association football and rugby union, which could suggest that there are football and rugby teams in SimNation.

Sims University offers students the option to play 10 collegiate sports, with no practical differences between them: Association football, American football, baseball, basketball, rugby, cricket, tennis, volleyball, lacrosse, and racquetball. Professional athletes are allowed to play collegiate sports while at university, though the collegiate sports themselves offer no salaries.

In addition to team sports, individual sports such as archery are featured in a number of Sims games. Additionally, games of physical skill such as pool, table tennis, and golf are played in various installments of the game, and non-competititve athetic activities such as swimming, dance, yoga, aerobics, chess, and fitness training are shown to be popular as social, lesiure, and/or skill-building activities, often having a TV channel dedicated to them. In The Sims 3: World Adventures, Sims can learn martial arts if they travel to Shang Simla, and they can participate in tournaments and achieve new color belts everytime they level up their ability.

The Sims Medieval is the only game in the franchise to include a playable athletic sport that has an element of professional competition: Kingball. Kingball is a racket sport and is played by either two or three players, on a court laid out in the shape of a triangle, with one player standing on each point. Like pool and dancing in the main games in the franchise, kingball is a secret skill that can be improved by practice and by investing in better equipment. If a kingball court is built in the kingdom, a league will be set up and the Monarch may receive a petition to patronise or fund it. It is unknown if kingball continues to be played in modern-day SimNation, either in its original or modified forms, however it could be considered a precursor to games like tennis and volleyball that are known to be played or watched in the modern day.

Royalty[]
W proper trait

SimNation appears to be a republic, with no royal family considered as heads of state for the entire nation, and instead "the leader of the free world" are elected as the head of state. However, a few pre-made Sims seem to be of royal or noble descent, although whether they are part of a largely defunct monarchy belonging to SimNation itself or inherited their titles from ancestors in another country is never clarified. The Sims Medieval includes a Monarch as one of its ten heroes, and the Monarch is the only hero character that must be present in every game. Assuming that Medieval takes place in SimNation, this would seem to indicate that the country had a monarchy in the past.

There is a royal family in Hidden Springs named the Vanderburgs. The "Queen" holds the job title Leader of the Free World, and her children are described as "Prince" and "Princess". It is unknown if they are the royal family of the entirety of SimNation or just a part of it; or, indeed, if they are descended from the royalty of another country altogether and simply retain the titles informally. In a similar story, Cedrick and Odessa Winchester of Midnight Hollow are said to have been born into royalty but had their throne usurped; like Catarina Vanderburg, they turned to politics as an alternative way to retain their former power. Nicoletta Lombardi of Monte Vista also shares a very similar story to the Vanderburgs and Winchesters, and it's mentioned she's the last of her line.

The Manave family in The Sims Castaway Stories appear to be the equivalent of royalty among SimNatives, with Fangaloka referred to as a tribal chief and deferred to as absolute leader of his community; however, it is apparent that this status is not recognised in the rest of SimNation, or possibly even outside of Felicity Island. Princess Zaghawa Maximus is implied to be both SimNative in origin and descended from a royal line; however, her status in SimNation is likely due to her wealth and celebrity as an opera singer rather than her lineage. Similarly, Rubisel Ichtaca of Isla Paradiso is descended from ancient royalty as, presumably, are his brother Guillermo, niece Liliana and nephew Everado. Rubisel is apparently still known as "The Prince", although the title now seems to be held informally, and the rest of the family do not seem to publicize the royal connection. Rubisel's unborn illegitimate child will also be a part of this royal bloodline, though since the baby's mother is married to another man, it is possible that the connection will go unacknowledged.

The Goth family may have held a minor title at some point, as a Lady Ravendancer Goth is mentioned in item descriptions for downloads from The Sims 3 Store. However, since Gunther's biography in The Sims: Unleashed makes it apparent that the Goths are recent immigrants to SimNation (moving there just before The Sims 3 takes place), it is likely that this title probably refers to the family's status in the Old Country, if they still hold it at all.

In Isla Paradiso there is a mermaid known as the Triton King, which may indicate that mermaids have royalty of their own.

Music[]

SimNation has a lot of majority of popular music genres that all exist every year. All renowned music genres internationally features jazz, blues, country, metal, rock, rockabilly, R&B, pop, hip hop, soul, disco, electronica, classical, Americana, reggae, tropical, surf, Latin, and world music. Starting in The Sims Bustin' Out, pop music has become a popular music genres appearing in every base game throughout The Sims series. Hip hop and R&B (abbreviation for rhythm and blues), are the only popular music genres emerged in SimNation. Jazz music has first appeared in The Sims: Hot Date as a map view music, and reappear The Sims 2: University and The Sims 4: Dine Out as a radio station. Classical and Latin (or salsa) both appeared in every base game (except for the base game of The Sims 2 and The Sims 4). Country appears in every Sims games (except for The Sims 4, whereas Backyard and Ranch came with The Sims 4: Perfect Patio Stuff and Horse Ranch). Every ethnic and cultural music appears in every Sims games such as world music in The Sims 2: Bon Voyage and The Sims 4, Egyptian, Chinese, and French in The Sims 3: World Adventures, Japanese folk in The Sims 4: Snowy Escape, and carnaval beats in The Sims 4.

Sims can play a variety of musical instruments such as the piano, violin, xylophone, drums, bass, pipe organ and synthesizer, besides they can use microphones to sing and DJ booths to DJ mixing. Also, in the future there is a new type of instrument similar to a bass, called laser rhythm-a-con.

In The Sims Medieval there is a hero called bard who writes poems and plays the lute (a type of medieval guitar) whose purpose is to entertain the people of the kingdom.

Sims can attend concerts at stadiums and theaters, besides taking classes in drums, bass, piano and guitar in the latter.

In Studio Town there are different recording studios, where Sims can work as singers and record abums. In The Sims 3: Late Night musical groups can be made and in The Sims 3: Showtime Sims can be professional singers and attend at stadiums, big show venues and outdoor stages to peform a gig. Also, with the Simport feature, players could send their singers to other players games to perform tours.

There are also karaoke machines for Sims to sing for fun, and in The Sims 4: City Living there are karaoke bars where Sims can perform in private spaces or in public for the rest of the bar.

Alcohol[]
Nectar Making skill icon

Virtually all of SimNation is a dry state, and alcohol is pretty much non-existent in it. Instead, various regions have invented drinks that improves the mood or removes sad feelings, but without the result of becoming drunk. Juice, nectar, mocktail (i.e. non-alcoholic cocktail) drinks, coffee, and pollen punch are among the beverages served at establishments instead.

Infrastructure[]

Cars drive on the right throughout the known SimNation. Roads are generally 2-lane with tarmac (A few places have dirt roads, e.g. Oasis Landing, Dragon Valley, and Monte Vista). Strangetown and Lucky Palms have de facto 4-lane highways, but with rather unusual highway ramps.

The Bright Blinky Wall Lamp by Wells Lighting nightlight[TS3:UL] indicate that NEMA 1-15 sockets are used (although with the left and right slots being the same size). The Saturday Morning Fun Kids! painting[TS3] shows a Schuko 7/1 socket, though the painting is treated as fiction by the painting's description and name.

The most common unit of measurement is the squares used for lot building, which do not have an official name. Kilometers have been used for e.g. the Marathon Runner Athletic challenge. The Sims 3: Seasons established that a world or Sim could use Celsius or Fahrenheit interchangeably.

Languages[]

Simlish is the sole spoken language, with no known minority languages. Simlish is also the most popular written language and alphabet by far, with English and "Simji" seeing some use.

Street names and clan names are always given in English, even in vacation-themed places like Champs Les Sims.

Social topics[]

Racial relations[]

Racism on the grounds of skin color is effectively non-existent in SimNation, and most districts have black, Asian, and Latino residents who live perfectly normal lives (The concept of traditionally black neighborhoods is completely non-existent in SimNation).

There have been cases of severe species-ism towards vampires, mummies, and SimBots (especially the latter two), with few or no apparent attempts being made by Sims to begin treating them normally (Oasis Landing became more accepting of SimBots in Patch 66). Nearby Sims who spot mummies or SimBots will often react with disgust at the sight of them, even halting their previous actions just to show their disgust (Sims with the Supernatural fan[TS3:SN] trait will instead react with excitement and glee).

Technophobes are also generally hostile to Plumbots and SimBots, while Plumbots with the Fear of Humans trait chip will be absolutely frightened by the sight of humans. Supernatural skeptics will be hostile to almost all species, being known to swing swatters at fairies, wanting witches and ghosts dead, supposedly stealing mummies' treasures, and mocking imaginary friends for not being real.

Gypsy appear to remain SimNation's name for what is in real life in the 21st century known as Romani, without there being any apparent racial controversies or discriminations about the term within SimNation (They are in fact treated as respected figures, except in Barnacle Bay), besides them being very heavily associated with fortune telling.

In The Sims 3, Sims can perform Mean interactions that specifically insult a Sim's species, incl., but not limited to, "Accuse of being a vampire", "Imply mom was a glowbug" (against fairies), "Insult Puny Human Brain" (SimBots against non-SimBots), and "Enthuse About Superior Robot Abilities" (Plumbots with Efficient trait chip against other species). The target will feel pretty insulted, but they're not treated as outright slurs.

Maids are hateful towards Bonehilda (a semi-sentient living skeleton), and will quit their job contract on the spot if they see one on a residential lot.

Gender equality[]

Equal rights between men and women are very high: Women get paid the same salaries as men, and can join all the same careers as men. Women are not treated as inferior simply for being women, and women can get into company leadership boards just as easily as men can. However, it is theoretically possible for lot owners to enforce gender exclusivity or discrimination using the gender specific restroom doors.

Occasionally, bathrooms on public lots may have uneven amounts of toilets between the male and female bathrooms. Dylan Shear in Roaring Heights, a town whose storyline very likely takes place in the interwar period, supposedly created "the scandal of the century" just by wearing jeans and business shirts, though other towns later on in the Sims 3 timeline considered it completely normal relatively soon afterwards.

Men were generally not allowed to wear skirts or dresses for quite some time,[82] until partway into the Sims 4 era.

Sexual orientation and gender identity[]

Homophobia, or any other kind of sexual orientation or gender discrimination issues, are effectively non-existent in SimNation, and Sims who are part of the LGBTQ+ community live perfectly normal lives. A Sim can be straight, homosexual or can have different degrees of attraction between men and women indistinctly.

Same-sex marriage has been available since The Sims, and is present in every game of the saga. Also, same-sex couples can adopt without any restrictions and they do not face any kind of discriminatory treatment at work.

Despite all of this, transgender people did not appear until The Sims 4, maybe implying that gender reassignment surgeries weren´t legal until then (Although, existing Sims cannot change gender, transgender Sims can only be created from scratch). There is also a Pride flag in the base game, hinting some kind of claims to this kind of matters.

Notes[]

  1. Confirmed in The Sims 1 and 2. Unclear in The Sims 3 where the Sim gets selected for vice president while being a governor, and in The Sims 4 where the Sim jumps from representant to "National Leader".

  80. The lack of emergency services (ambulances or other forms of medical evacuation) to save dying Sims is probably because the game developers made the games to be purely of entertainment, rather than being serious on healthcare. Instead, Sims are saved from death by unrealistic ways such as pleading to the Grim Reaper.
  81. Saves in baseball is when a relief pitcher ends a game with a 3 run lead at most and records 3 outs or pitched the last three innings regardless of lead. However, this term applies to football and hockey when the goalkeeper prevents a score.
  82. Child Sims were allowed to wear princess dresses in The Sims 3: Generations.
