The Sims[]
The "Exerto" Benchpress Exercise Machine is the default exercise machine for The Sims. It may be the product that launched the Exerto brand of exercise machines and bodybuilding equipment.
Superstar added a high-priced "prestige" exercise machine called The Machine Workout Bench. It raises a room's room score, but is no better at building the body skill.

The Sims 2[]
The Exerto 5000 Multipress Exercise Machine is the default weight machine for The Sims 2. University added the Exerto Butterfly Exercise Machine, Exerto Free Press Exercise Machine, and Exerto Leg Extension Exercise Machine, which are basic, single-function machines that cost §900 instead of §1,400, and have a fun rating of 1 instead of 3.
Sims can use these machines until they become fatigued. Controllable Sims will not use weight machines autonomously. On community lots, uncontrolled Sims almost always ignore weight machines. An uncontrolled Sim on a community lot may use a weight machine if all treadmills in the room are being used, but this is uncommon.
If Seasons is installed, Sims' temperature will not change when using exercise machines, as it does when using the treadmill and Exerto Super Exercise Bike. Sims will also gain fitness hobby enthusiasm if FreeTime is installed.
If FreeTime is installed, the Exerto 5000 can be tinkered with, but the less expensive weight machines from University cannot.

The Sims 3[]
Sims can weight machines until they become fatigued. It increases the athletic skill, specifically the strength (as opposed to cardio) aspect of a Sim's fitness. Sims with high athletic skill can train other Sims on this object. Weight machines are commonly found in the gym and academy lot types, alongside treadmills (and in the latter case, Board Breakers and Sheng Hai Training Dummies).
Werewolves[TS3:SN] in werewolf form get a significant boost in how fast they increase their Athletic skill with weight machines, though the boost bonus percentage is unclear. This is in contrast to treadmills, where they don't get a boost.
