Okay so as some of you may know, we recently created a new YouTube account for the wiki. Seeing as we have one, we may as well put it to some good use given the success of our Facebook and Twitter profiles.

Basically the aim here is to get some ideas of what we can do with the channel on a realistic level when taken into regard with copyright and all that stuff (using it to host stuff like trailers usually means EA start flagging stuff). Feel free to suggest whatever comes to mind, that way we'll have a broader vision of the direction we wish to take. Lost Labyrinth Flag united kingdom england (c)(b) 19:47, May 26, 2013 (UTC)

To try and get the ball rolling, I think walkthrough videos might be good to supplement our Game Guides namespace. Gameplay videos should come under the Fair Use license, so it shouldn't be too problematic on the copyright side provided we're careful with background music (if any) that we might use. Plus these videos can be captured in-game (with the 1 minute limit) or using something like FRAPS (free version has a limit plus watermark) or another video capture source, so they're relatively easy to get. 10/10 great idea. It's so clear from this super-duper-long discussion that the whole community agrees with this. </sarcasm> Lost Labyrinth Flag united kingdom england (c)(b) 21:52, June 4, 2013 (UTC)

I've been thinking about this actually... It was never clear to me why we had the YouTube channel in the first place (like, the old one, I mean). But since we've got it, we might as well find some use for it. I was thinking about maybe having contests associated with the channel. Perhaps a contest where we mix tracks of music together and put them into a "video" then have people guess the names of the tracks and the games they came from. We could also do video tutorials for how to do wiki editing tasks. I dunno, I'm grasping at straws. -- LostInRiverview talk ~ blog 23:00, June 4, 2013 (UTC)

I like the idea of the gameplay videos - it could attract a lot of potential users to the site. Ѧüя◎ґ (talk) 23:59, June 4, 2013 (UTC)
Gameplay videos could be good, but I also like LiR's idea of holding contests. Both ideas can bring in new users and it could possibly bring back old users. Beds (parlare - da leggere) 07:40, June 5, 2013 (UTC)
hey guys im back from the dead it was fun I think all the ideas listed so far have good points going for them. Gameplay tutorials, such as, oh I dunno... Completing a tomb, maybe? could do well, contests would be fun, and editing tutorials could also help unsure users. ~ Waikikamukow (Anyone wanna chat?) 03:04, June 8, 2013 (UTC)
I agree with Waikikamukow - there could be tutorials and maybe cheat guides and handy tips for other simmers. Jason (Talk) {{{1}}} 19:30, June 8, 2013 (UTC)

Based on what I see here, it seems that tutorial/game guide videos and "just for fun" stuff appear to be popular. We just need to decide how we're going to make the channel accessible to the community at large. Obviously the channel would be run by the administrators but we need a way for others to share their content before it's uploaded to YouTube. Sending the video file via e-mail to whatever address the channel uses sounds like the easiest option though most email clients have a very small file size limit (by small I mean 10MB), which would make videos very hard to share especially if they're rendered in HD. Perhaps there's an alternative? Lost Labyrinth Flag united kingdom england (c)(b) 11:57, June 30, 2013 (UTC)

Perhaps using something like Dropbox or SkyDrive would help mitigate the file size issue. We also need to solve the issue of copyright, particularly if we're using audio samples from other sources, but we'll get to that later. Doesn't the Wiki have a Gmail account? If so, can we just use that instead of creating another email address? It's less hassle and we can also put that email account to good use too. But, if this email account that I speak of doesn't exist anymore, I'm sure SkyDrive could be a good way to send the videos. Beds (parlare - da leggere) 15:00, July 26, 2013 (UTC)
AFAIK, yes. Though I remember one time I tried to login to the old channel using the old account and it flipped out as I had accessed from a completely different country to the last person who used it beforehand, so we'd probably have to leave channel management to somebody in America (I think LiR made the new one) but I'm hoping distribution won't be so much of an issue regardless of where somebody providing a video is from. This thread is dead, so I'm closing it. If you want to discuss the YouTube channel, bring it up in a new thread. -- LostInRiverview talk ~ blog 22:18, August 22, 2013 (UTC)
