The Roth family is one of the pre-made families in Riverblossom Hills that came with the Seasons expansion pack for The Sims 2. The family appears to be a parody of the Goth family from Pleasantview, with parents Morty and Stella Roth serving as counterparts to Mortimer and Bella Goth, respectively, while their children Sandra and Xander Roth bear similarities to Cassandra and Alexander Goth.

According to the family description, Stella has become restless since moving to Riverblossom Hills. Her relationship with Morty is poor, as very few romantic interactions can be made between them. While the family has only recently moved to the neighborhood, the Roths are cousins to longtime resident Betty Goldstein. Morty is also friends with Jason Greenman and is acquainted with his wife Rose, as well as with Catherine Viejo, Betty's best friend and the aunt of Cleo Shikibu. Stella, however, is only acquainted with the Greenmans. Their daughter Sandra, meanwhile, is in a relationship with Jacob Martin, who lives with Betty, Catherine, and his father Andrew Martin, the latter of whom Sandra has not yet met.

By far the wealthiest residents in the Riverblossom Hills neighborhood, the Roth family resides at 208 Welsh Lane, a house that bears more than a striking resemblance to the Goth family home at 165 Sim Lane in Pleasantview. In fact, the house is a direct mirror image to the Goth residence, though the Roth house is noticeably brighter than its counterpart and is decorated with more modern furniture and appliances.

Onomatology

Roth is an English, German, or Jewish surname with several etymological origins. One comes from Old German and means "red," possibly in reference to one's hair color or complexion. Other possible origins include a topographical etymology meaning "wood," denoting someone residing is such a location, and a derivative of hroth, a proto-Germanic word meaning "fame" or "renown."

The family's surname could be a reference to the Goth family's association with the color red, specifically Bella Goth, as the family is intended as a spoof of the famous pre-made family that has been present in every iteration of the game since The Sims. However, referring to the latter two origins of the surname, it could also refer to the family's residence in Riverblossom Hills, a neighborhood with strong ties to nature and wherein the family is known for being the wealthiest and most prestigious.

Another possible origin of the name could refer to the Rothschild family, a prominent Jewish family of noble rank from Germany known for amassing the largest private fortune in modern world history.

Similarities

The Roth family bears many similarities to the Goth family, the most obvious being their names. Their surname is only differentiated by its first letter, while the given names of Morty, Sandra, and Xander could easily be short forms of "Mortimer," "Cassandra," and "Alexander," respectively. Stella's name breaks with this style, though it emulates the name "Bella" in the way it sounds.

Additionally, Morty shares the Knowledge aspiration with Mortimer, as well as the Cancer zodiac sign and nearly identical points in personality and interests. Like his father, Xander bears the same similarities with his counterpart, Alexander, sharing the same personality, interests, and zodiac sign. Besides sharing similar names, Stella and Sandra bear little resemblance to their Goth counterparts, though Stella does wear a red dress and shares the painting and piano hobbies with Bella. Sandra's negative relationship with Jules O'Mackey, her boyfriend's ex-girlfriend, could also allude to Cassandra's negative reaction if she discovers Don Lothario, her fiancé, has been cheating on her with three other women.

The Roth family residence also bears a striking resemblance to the Goth house. Aside from the obvious differences in paint color, their home is a mirror-image of its counterpart with a nearly identical layout. With the exception of the children's bedrooms, the placement of the rooms are perfectly reversed across its three stories.

Differences

While the Roths are meant to parody the Goths and share a number of similarities with them, there are also some noticeable differences between the two families. The most obvious difference between them is the fact that the Roth family matriarch, Stella, is still present within the playable household. The disappearance of her counterpart, Bella Goth, serves as one of the main plotlines of the Pleasantview neighborhood and remains one of the largest mysteries surrounding The Sims franchise.

Most of the differences between the Roths and the Goths can be traced to Stella and her daughter Sandra. Whereas Bella Goth's aspiration is Romance, Stella has the Popularity aspiration. Stella's relationship with her husband Morty is also not as healthy as the one between Bella and Mortimer, as Stella's memories indicate she has never been in love with Morty. She doesn't even have a crush on him anymore and few romantic interactions are available to them when the family is first played, with Stella often rejecting any romantic interactions that are above "peck" or "tender kiss". Meanwhile, Sandra shares very little in common with Cassandra Goth other than their similar-sounding names and their preference for pigtails. Sandra is described is loud and boisterous while Cassandra is said to be quiet and mysterious. She is also still in the teen life stage and is attending private school, whereas Cassandra is already an adult working in the Science career. Similar to the situation between Sandra and Cassandra, Morty Roth is also younger than his counterpart and works in a different career. While Mortimer Goth is an elder who is retired from the Science career, Morty is still an adult and works in the new Adventurer career that came with The Sims 2: Seasons.

Other key differences between the Roth and Goth families can be found in their style and personal tastes. While the Goths are known for their association with dark and gothic colors, the Roths are shown to prefer brighter colors in their home and style of dress. Their home is decorated with more contemporary pieces of furniture that feel a bit rustic and is furnished with numerous modern appliances, such as televisions and video games, items that are noticeably absent from the antiquated Goth house. Additionally, in place of the family cemetery and the wedding decorations at the Goth house, the Roth home features a pool and a greenhouse. In terms of personal style, the Roths dress in more modern and "cooler" clothing than the Goths, who prefer dark, traditional-styles clothes.

Apart from the main family members, Annabelle Goldstein, who appears to be a parody of Frida Goth, was married and had a child, Betty Goldstein. As revealed in The Sims 3: Supernatural, Frida never married and died before ever having children.
