The Sims 2: Apartment Life The Sims 3: University Life The Sims 4: Tiny Living Stuff

The Murphy bed is a type of bed introduced in The Sims 2: Apartment LifeThe Sims 3: University Life, and The Sims 4: Tiny Living Stuff. The bed folds into the wall to save space. However, unlike real-life Murphy beds, the space used by an opened bed is still considered to be in use when the bed is closed. While Sims are able to walk through that space, objects cannot be placed in that space without using the moveobjects cheat.

The Murphy bed was first introduced in The Sims 2: Apartment Life as the Murphy "Hide-Away" Bed. The bed is particularly useful in apartments, as it can conserve space when not in use. However, if a Sim is in a poor mood or has a low Body skill when opening the bed, the Sim will be crushed and killed.

The Murphy bed returns in The Sims 3: University Life. Sims get crushed by the Murphy bed more often, but those accidents rarely end up with death. Instead, Sims will get the Murphy Bed Clinophobia moodlet that will last for 6 hours, and during the time they have it they won't be able to close or pull down a Murphy bed.

Murphy beds are reintroduced in The Sims 4: Tiny Living Stuff. Like in previous games, they are designed to save space in small homes and fold out as a bed. However unlike the previous games, Murphy beds in The Sims 4 are electronically powered, rather than the mechanical Murphy beds in The Sims 2 and The Sims 3. As a result, these beds can break like any other electronic item, and Sims will have to repair them to reduce the chance of death. Sims also use a remote control to open the bed, in contrast to the previous games where it was done by hand, although sometimes the electronic mechanism fails and sims try to manually drag the bed down (this carries a very slight chance of death by Murphy bed). Murphy beds can be upgraded to never break - meaning that they will never cause accidental death.

Also different from the previous games, Murphy beds in The Sims 4 include a variant that turns into a couch when folded, and one without a couch.

Death by Murphy bed[]

In The Sims 2: Apartment Life, if a Sim with fewer than five body points and a mood of less than -70 opens the bed, there is a 5% chance that the bed will fall on them and crush them to death. The ghost of a Sim who dies from being crushed by a Murphy bed is white, and will avoid the bed.

In The Sims 3: University Life, failing to open or close a Murphy bed may result in the Sim's Blunt Force Trauma death. The death can also be caused by a vending machine. The ghost of a Sim who dies from being crushed by a Murphy bed is light red/pink, and feathers fly around the Sim.

In The Sims 4: Tiny Living Stuff, Sims normally open the Murphy bed via remote control. However sometimes this fails (the chance of this happening increases greatly with a broken Murphy bed) and Sims will then try to manually open the bed - doing so can lead to being crushed to death. Sims can also be crushed to death when sleeping in the Murphy bed - again, the chances of this happening is higher when the bed is broken. Ghosts that died this way have "Zs" floating around in their chest and they can possess sims for energy (draining the target Sims' energy and filling the ghost's energy meter). These ghosts can also warn other Sims about the bed, although Sims won't believe it.
