The Sims 2 The Sims 3 The Sims 4

The Sims 2The Sims 3, and The Sims 4 all allow teens to take a part-time job. In The Sims 2, elders who re-enter the workforce after retiring or quitting their adult career can only work part-time jobs, with the same advancement levels as teens. In The Sims 3, young adultsadults, and elders can also take the same part-time jobs as teens, but will be unable to hold a full-time job or register as self-employed while they hold a part-time position. In The Sims 4, only teens can hold part-time jobs.

This is useful for Sims attending school as it does not interfere with their school schedule. Older Sims can take part-time jobs too. They pay less per hour, but have fewer hours overall, so they are not as time-consuming as full-time jobs. All part-time jobs only have 3 levels, and Sims cannot retire from part-time jobs, so they will not receive pensions.[TS3]

In The Sims 2, part-time jobs are not labeled as such. All career tracks other than Natural Science, Artist, Show Business, and Paranormal have parallel part-time tracks which only go to level 3. (The careers that do not have part-time tracks are only open to college graduates.) When a teen or elder looks for a job through the newspaper or computer, only positions in the part-time tracks will be available. A teen in high school or an elder who has retired from a full-time job will have a second tab in the job panel, which will show the part-time job. Young adults can't have jobs with regular hours, but can work on campus as baristas and cafeteria workers. Downtown[TS2:NL] also offers part-time work as DJs and bartenders.

In The Sims 3, Sims can apply directly at the work place for all part-time jobs. Performance options are limited to: Business As Usual (normal workday), Work Hard (more performance, but more stress), and Take It Easy (less performance, but less stress). Promotions are dependent only on mood. Normally, teens and older can take a part-time job, and there are no restrictions on how to apply for the job. Sims employed in a part-time job will not receive any career opportunities.

Teens who partake in afterschool activities[TS3:G] are not able to get a part-time job that starts between 3 PM and 5 PM. They may only work as a Mausoleum Clerk.
